bridges. a wintry mix and tricky road conditions that could be ahead. deadly fire. breaking now, row homes and up in flames claiming the life of a person inside. stars take a stand. the push for gender equality stole the spotlight at the golden globes. messy, wintry mix moving in. another winter wallop could make roads slick. wee you covered. good morning, welcome to show -- we have you covered. good morning, welcome to "nbc10 news today." i'm tracy davidson. >> i'm via sikahema. our team of meteorologists has issued a first alert. nbc10 news has live coverage this morning as we monitor the roads and the bridges that will get icy and slippery from sleet and freezing rain. we start with first alert meteorologist bill henley this morning. he is tracking the wintry mix. good morning. >> good morning. it's going to stay dry this morning. but you can expect those icy roadways to appear this afternoon. entire areas under the first alert, and the first of the wet

weather moves in far north and west at 11:00. and during the afternoon, we'll see most of the wet weather. icy conditions could last until midnight. light snow and freezing rain, the biggest threat is freezing rain. slippery conditions, roads, address, and sidewalks untreated are going to be a problem later today. right now, dry. you see a few snow showers in central pennsylvania. warm air is mixing in. a mix of sleet, freezing rain, and snow, too. cold this morning, 9 in new jersey. 13 degrees in the suburbs. teens for the lehigh valley and delaware. we will see a warmer afternoon. the wet weather will be falling during the afternoon. the temperatures stay just below freezing at the lehigh valley and delaware. even if it hits 33 degrees in new jersey, it is going to be the ground that stays below

freezing, making for some icy conditions later today. i'll break it down hour by hour and show you how much ice you're likely to wind up with when i come back in ten minutes. first to katy zachry. >> we could make the first alert all about the water main breaks and ice. route 73 at signal hill, the road is closed due to a water main break. crews are on the way to try to fix that so the intersection can be used again. all right. we also have some mansion issues. there's -- mass transit issues. there's a water main break affecting things on the septa broad street line. because of that, trains are not stopping at the susquehanna dauphin station. i'll let you know when that lifts. trains are not stopping because of the water main break issue affecting things on septa. for amtrak, a long-term project

going until spring. some lines are affected because they're modified especially on the northeast corridor line and also the line for the new jersey coastline. one person died in a row home fire in west philadelphia. we have more from pamela osborne. what can you tell us? >> reporter: the call came in a little after 3:30 this morning. firefighters were here within three minutes of that initial phone call coming out. unfortunately, it was already too late. one person died in this house fire on the 800 block of north holly street. firefighters tell us when they got on scene, there was heavy smoke on the first and second floors. the victim was found inside. it's unclear whether the victim was a man or women. it is also too soon to speculate

on what caused the fire. two days ago philly lost a fellow firefighter and civilian in a row home fire in north philadelphia. as we come back live, you see fire investigators standing outside of the house. we know that some are inside of the first floor to determine a cause of the fire. reporting live in west philadelphia, pamela osborne, nbc10 news. >> thank you. back to a wintry mix we're tracking for later this morning. sleet and freezing rain are headed for our area. that could make roadways and bridges slick as you're driving around today. >> nbc10's matt delucia is live in roxboro this morning. how are drivers getting ready for this next round of winter weather? >> reporter: roads have just been plowed from the last round, now there's more ice

accumulation. we're in storm force nbc10 roxbury. the temperature just under 18 degrees. 17.6 degrees here in roxboro now. any water on the roadways right now would freeze and turn to ice. that would be a big problem especially for in the roxboro, manayunk areas, with hills on the roadways. snow is one thing, ice is another. we talked with drivers ralaft night. >> it's -- last night. >> it's scary. you could slide through a stop sign. you have to be very careful. >> i think i'm stuck up here. i won't drive in this. >> reporter: so at the top of the hour, we did a little experimenting to show the difference between sleet and freezing rain. freezing rain is actual liquid that falls from the air and freezes when it hits the ground

as opposed to sleet which is like ice pellets that you hear that tapping on your windshield. we poured water here on the sidewalk. this water froze in less than 30 minutes. the freezing rain, if it happens later today, as we predict with that mix later on this afternoon, that could definitely cause problems especially on your windshields because once that water hits the windshields and you get that glaze over top, you're going to want to pull out the ice scraper. also watch out for the black ice. as always around this time of year, make sure you keep your distance from the car in front of you. matt said most of the snow is off the roads. not in atlantic city, though. the schools are closed. the city is having trouble clearing more than a foot of snow dumped during last week's blizzard. now state transportation crews are step flooding to help.

officials gave priority to removing mountains of snow near schools like the texas avenue school. citizens tell us their neighborhoods also need the plows to visit. khalid muhammad lives on one street that is still unplowed. he used his car to pack down the snow so he could get to work. >> it's terrible. nothing has been done back here. it's a shame. >> state crews are moving the snow to bader field and construction sites in the area. remember, you can get everything you need to know to track the cold weather and the wintry mix coming our way with the free nbc10 app. 5:37. today in new jersey, mourners will gather to honor a family

who died christmas eve. a 17-year-old is facing murder charges. yesterday the community paid its last respects to a family friend who was killed. authorities have not determined a motive for the massacre. today the new jersey assembly will vote to what to do if you are found with a bump stock. it gives semiautomatic rifles a higher rate of fire. investigators in the las vegas massacre say it did allowed the shooter to kill many more people. assault-style rifles are already illegal in new jersey which means no one should have bump stocks. if the bill passes, anyone selling, shipping, or disposing of bump stocks will face five years in prison. new jersey legislators proposed the bill a few days after the las vegas massacre. incoming governor murphy says he'll fine the bill. the national rifle association -- he'll sign the bill. the national rifle association

supported the bans, but now changed course saying bans never help anything. and president trump will hit the road, flying to tennessee to talk to farmers about the economy. he will push welfare reform and try and get a budget out by next month. after the release of "fire and fury" that says many are calling the president called it a fake book by a discredited author. former adviser steve bannon is doing an aboutface. he says he supports the president and his son, donald trump jr., after getting criticism from the president and his financial backers. in the book, "fire and fury," bannon described a meeting with donald jr., senior campaign aides, and a russian lawyer as treasonous and unpatriotic. bannon now says the comments were directed toward former campaign chairman paul manafort. bannon referred to donald trump

jr. as a patriot and good man. 5:40. it's cold outside, and they're taking advantage of it in the pocono mountains. you see the wet weather to the west. temperatures iran goiaren't goi as cold when this arrives this afternoon. that sounds great, but it's going to be just cold enough so it's not going to be all snow. instead we'll get a mixture of sleet and freezing rain. that will give much of the area icy conditions for this afternoon and into this evening. the hour-by-hour fork shows by 10:00 -- forecast shows by 10:00, completely dry. the temperature up to 22 in philadelphia. warmer than it got all day yesterday. temperatures will continue to climb. look at early this afternoon, 1:30 this afternoon. snow in the lehigh valley and

reading. this is the area of greatest concern, the sleet and freezing rain that will extend into delaware and south jersey, this is 3:00 in the afternoon. as schoolkids head home, it will be slipperiness on the sidewalks, the roadways, and address, as well. even into the early and late afternoon hours, that wet weather, the sleet and freezing rain into delaware and south jersey, then it changes to all rain, but the road surfaces may still be cold enough even at the shore with temperatures above freezing for some icy conditions. here's the potential for some ice. at 2:00 this afternoon, a layer of very light ice over chester county, delaware county, new castle county, and salem county. and that expands as we go into the evening hours. much of the area won't see a lot of ice, but it doesn't take much. just a thin layer of ice is going to make for slippery conditions for much of the area. notice how it's quiet north of doylestown. it's more likely to just be

snow. about a quarter inch from pottstown, half inch of snow in allentown, and close to an inch in the pocono mountains. that will be falling later today. warmer weather on the way. the ten day on 10 when i'm back in ten minutes. >> all right. >> thank you. 5:42. we'll look at 95 this morning. >> katy zachry has you covered with that. katie? >> yeah, we'll start with a look at 95. we haven't looked at the camera all morning because we've been busy with mass transit issues, water main breaks. 95 at a good time, no crashes. moderate traffic, it was light earlier, and it's picked up in the last little bit to moderate traffic. the drive time southbound between woodhaven and the vine is only about 13 minutes. now is a good time to get on 95 if you're headed to work or school. we talked about water main breaks. the most recent one is in camden county. this is in voorheis township, at route 73 at signal hill drive. the right lane is closed there. and one that we've also been

the spotlight wasn't just on awards. it was on change and female empowerment in the industry. >> entertainers wore black to stand in solidarity against gender discrimination. nbc10's delay clark is in our digital operations center this morning with the night's highlights. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. last night was the first major awards show since the sexual harassment controversy erupted last fall. last night's golden globes awards shined a spotlight on the #metoo movement and the hollywood mainly male-dominated culture. top talent, actors, and actresses became advocates. they hit the red carpet dressed in black. the dress code, a show of solidarity in their calls to end sexual misconduct and abuse while highlighting gender inequality. oprah winfrey was honored with the cecil b. demille lifetime achievement award. she looked right at the camera with a rallying cry to young women everywhere.

you hadn't actually seen it, really thoughtful comments from james franco. >> nice. >> i was impressed by that. >> if you're pushing out the door, you will want to grab your warmest clothing. in center city, no sign of wet weather yet. that changes during the day. bundle up if you're heading out. the temperatures in the teens and below and some windchills are back down in the single digits. we will see an icy situation developing. flow is to the north, a wintry mix will bring -- snow to the north, warranty mix will bring ice to the roads. there's a few neighborhoods that may be above freezing during the afternoon. the ground is still frozen. that's why we're going to see that ice develop later today. the clouds will be building as the day goes on. the temperatures will be climbing. right now, 19 degrees in philadelphia. that is up, that was the high yesterday afternoon.

teens for the suburbs and for south jersey. and in the philadelphia area, the temperatures are going to start off in the teens and then warm into the 30s this afternoon. just cold enough for an icy glaze later today. commute this morning dry, the wintry mix starts in far northern and western areas at 11:00. it's mainly going to be here this afternoon. the mix, wintry mix, and freezing rain. this is going to give us the slippery afternoon and possibly evening commute, especially on untreated roads and walkways. right now, snow storm activity in central pennsylvania. it's not here yet. we'll see it slowly move in later this morning. there is the main event. not going to be a lot of precipitation, not a lot of snow, not a lot of ice. nice and clear to the west. it will clear and warm up over the coming days. the hour-by-hour forecast shows the wet weather at 2:00 this afternoon. still going at 5:00 for the evening commute.

and then it changes to plain old rain and sweeps out of here leaving us with sunshine for tomorr tomorrow. by the time snow gets to us, it will be rain. it will be too warm for anything else. today, right up to freezing, 32 degrees the high temperature, a wintry mix this afternoon. that icy situation with temperatures dropping down below freezing may continue into the early morning hours if left untreated. mother nature will treat us to sunshine, melting for tuesday and wednesday. look at thursday, up to 50 degrees. the clouds will be building thursday night, and here comes the rain. ea even warmer on friday. the salt and graham will wash away -- and grime will wash away on friday and saturday. it should be drying out for the eagles game in the afternoon. 47 on saturday. another round of cold, but not the brutal cold that we've been through. high temperatures into the 30s and dry from sunday, monday,

5:58. passengers already frustrated by weather-related delays and cancelations at jfk got hit with another problem yesterday. look at this -- a busted pipe sent flooding waters cascading through parts of the international terminal. incoming flights to that terminal were suspended for several hours. as of last night, some people still don't have their bags. >> they've got to get their act together.

i mean, i came from vacation. but we're tired, frustrated. we didn't get sleep, and we still don't know where our bags are. >> that is frustrating. the terminal has since resumed normal operation. an investigation is underway to find out why there was such chaos following the flooding, and just like the passengers, the head of the port authority says what happened is unacceptable. >> can you imagine walking through a room like that looking for your bag? my gash. >> no. that's tough. now for more of the stories we're following -- at 6:00 a.m. -- >> a philadelphia community finds one of their neighbors dead in a burning home. another dose of winter. first alert radar tracking a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain that will create tricky travel conditions for drivers later today. and kings of the ice. the lineup of men's figure skating heading to the olympics is set, and a pennsylvania native is on the elite list.
